Attending School in a Different Country

Welcome back to Maren's Abroadventures!

Today, I will be discussing what it is like to attend school in Spain, and how it is different than in Oklahoma. As someone who has attended multiple different schools in both the United States and Spain, it is very interesting to see the difference.

Escola de les Aigües
My first example is the elementary school in Barcelona I am currently volunteering. I find it very interesting that they separate each grade by floors of the building, so it is easier to navigate the kids. My favorite thing about elementary school is that the teachers are the ones who rotate between classes instead of the students. I feel as if this method helps the kids stay engaged, especially when they are so young. The school also offers many different after-school activities for the kids, including soccer practice, archery, and even language classes.

Casvi Boadilla del Monte
While recess is important to almost every kid, no matter where they are from, but Spain does it better. The playgrounds are always very big and offer multiple options for activities. There are constantly multiple games of soccer being held, which will have all of the kids drenched in sweat when they come back to class. It often feels as if the kids have a lot more freedom in Spain, especially when kids are allowed to walk home for lunch and come back, and I even had swimming classes as well.

CETT Univeristy
When it comes to my university, CETT Tourism, Hospitality, and Gastronomy, it is one building shaped like the letter D. This one building, filled with hospitality college students, really comes together as a community since we share the same passion, people. Our classes are very small, from around 15-40 students each, which makes them constantly very interactive with the teacher. My home university in Oklahoma mainly has huge lecture halls for hundreds of people, so CETT is very different. However,  I have noticed that there are not many places in the university building in Barcelona for students to sit down and study, especially in groups.

See you next week!
